Posted: August 13th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Events | No Comments »

Pitch in to give your city a clean sweep during the Fall Cleaning the Capital campaign

Ottawa – Residents of all ages are invited to join the City’s annual Cleaning the Capital fall campaign, which runs from September 15 to October 15, 2011. Early bird registration starts August 15, 2011. Participating in Cleaning the Capital provides a great opportunity for high school students to add to their community involvement volunteer hours and for families and friends to work together on community cleanup projects that help make Ottawa clean, green, graffiti-free, and litter-free.

It’s easy to get involved. For the fall, cleanup efforts are encouraged in an area where litter has accumulated such as a park, woodlot, ravine, shoreline, bus stop, pathway, schoolyard or any public property requiring tidying up. Suggested spots to target include along fence lines, in open spaces with tall grass, along trails, and around drainage ditches and catch basins. While cleaning up open areas that are maintained and mowed by the City, such as in our parks, please don’t pick up the leaves, as they will be mulched by City staff to return their nutrients to the soil.

Register your cleanup project between August 15 and September 14 to be eligible to win early bird prizes. Registration continues until October 15. Cleaning the Capital volunteers who submit their online Cleanup Reports by October 31 are also eligible to win one of many prizes donated by our generous sponsors.

While registering, participants may request a cleanup starter kit by completing this section of the registration form. Kits can include disposable vinyl gloves, garbage bags, leaf-and-yard waste bags, campaign posters, magnets or stickers, and safety tips to assist your cleanup project. Kits may also include graffiti removal supplies if requested. Check the collection calendar for when to put out garbage, recycling and leaf-and-yard waste resulting from fall cleanup projects.

Entire communities, including schools, neighbourhood organizations and associations, businesses, families, friends and individuals take up the Cleaning the Capital challenge each year. A record 91,305 participants made Cleaning the Capital 2010 the most successful campaign to date. With your help, Cleaning the Capital can be bigger and better in 2011!

Guided Tree Walk, Sunday, June 26th, Champlain Park

Posted: June 25th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Events | No Comments »

You’re invited to a Walk in the Park!  The Ottawa Forests and Greenspace Advisory Committee (OFGAC) has asked Champlain Park to host OFGAC’s first guided walk this year.

Our big trees are pretty special. During the walk we’ll be discussing their history, their social value, and their contribution to the environment.  We’ll highlight examples of how residents have “designed with nature” to preserve the urban forest.

Champlain Park has a diversity of native trees in our neighbourhood.  The bur oaks are the biggest and oldest.  You’ll get a chance to admire the two largest bur oaks up close during the walking tour.

Date: Sunday, June 26

Time: 10 a.m. to noon

Gather at the north end of Champlain Park at Pontiac Street to begin the tour.

Local politicians and others from outside Champlain Park are invited to the event. Feel free to invite your friends, too!

Byron Path Parade and Fundraiser – June 18th at 10am

Posted: June 15th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Events | No Comments »

An all ages friendly parade will take place next Saturday, June 18th starting at 10am.

Meet at the Byron Linear Tramway Park (just east of Island Park on the pathway) at 10:00 a.m. Everyone is encouraged to bring instruments and noise makers – the more the better. I encourage you to wear something silly and/or colourful too. It is a parade after all. :)

Participants will walk/roll along Byron Pathway, celebrating the pathway our community has been fighting for, then cross at Hilson, and head to Iona Park where there will a bubble party! I have no idea what a bubble party is, but it sounds exciting!

There will be coffee and lemonade as well as a bake sale at Iona. Proceeds will go to the OMB appeal for the Convent Site.

Issue of vehicle access to convent site through Byron Linear Park going back to Planning Committee next week

Posted: May 18th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Events | No Comments »
A few key updates to report on the issue of the proposed southern (Byron side) exit from the convent propety this morning.   There was signficant interest and strong opinions on the issue at the WVCA  AGM last night – and  a sudden realization that timelines are short.

Firstly, the Councillor  informed us  last night that the issue will be coming to Planning Committee next Tuesday, May 24 (9:30am, City Hall, Champlain Room).  This fact had not been included in the emails she sent out on the issue over the past week. Here is the Planning Committee agenda:
http://ottawa.ca/calendar/ottawa/citycouncil/pec/2011/05-24/agendaindex14.htm.  Scroll down to Item 4, “Vehicular access through Byron Avenue Linear Park to the Proposed Development at 90 Richmond Road…” and the actual report can be accessed:
http://ottawa.ca/calendar/ottawa/citycouncil/pec/2011/05-24/04-%20ACS2011-ICS-PGM-0127%20Final%20Byron%20Avenue.htm.

The fact that the Byron access is back on the table is also reported in an article in the Citizen today:
http://www.ottawacitizen.com/news/Build+access+route+Westboro+convent+site+across+Byron+park+city/4799494/story.html

The Planning Department report states that “This report was advertised in the daily papers and property owners located between Richmond Road, Iona Street, Island Park Drive and Kirkwood Avenue have been notified of the recommendation in this report and the Committee meeting date by mail.”   However, those living  within that area,  had, as of yesterday not been notified  - and the report is dated May 12.

On May 18, a meeting  was scheduled with the Councillor to discuss this issue, with Jason Thomson (WVCA), Roland Dorsay of Island Park Community Association and Amos Hayes attending. What the meeting this morning made obvious was that  Councillor Hobbs is totally committed to supporting the cut through Byron Park.  She actually contends that this option will affect less of the park, because the Shannon route is longer, and continues to insist that all new city roads must be 16.5 metres (54 ft) wide, which would mean a Shannon which is wider than Richmond Road or Byron, let alone the other smaller streets in the area.

After much debate at the meeting this morning,  Roland  Dorsay left  Councillor Hobbs and her staff with one additional question: why couldn’t a doubled-in-width Shannon be used as an exit for service/emergency vehicles only, while residents on the Byron side of the development exit the property via Richmond?  This proposed compromise would provide the second public access while also limiting the impact on both Shannon and the linear park.

WVCA urge you to make your views known on the issue, whether by attending the Planning Committee meeting on Tuesday (anyone who would like to address the committee can sign up to speak that day) or by providing written comments to the Planning Committee Coordinator: Caitlin Salter-MacDonald, email hidden; JavaScript is required" target="_blank">email hidden; JavaScript is required.

Here is  an example of the argument being made in the report: “Providing an access across the linear park is not unlike any of the nine roads that currently bisect this park from Holland Avenue to Churchill Avenue and since the proposed access would go through the longest continuous stretch of the linear park between Holland and Churchill Avenues without a crossing and the two resulting segments would be longer than some current segments, the impact is considered minimal.”

Jason Thomson
